Best hot chocolate in Switzerland

This is for all the chocolate lovers among you. The chocolate standard in Switzerland is high and therefore any hot chocolate you will have will be a good one, starting with the affordable Caotina powder chocolate at the Migros restaurant. But if you really want to satisfy your taste buds, drink a hot chocolate at the following places. You will agree with me that you just had the best hot chocolate of your life and will probably want to come back for more.

Best hot chocolate in Switzerland:

Vivendi Café, St. Gallen

I’m so lucky that one of the best hot chocolate in Switzerland can be found in the city I used to live. If I have to run some errands in St. Gallen, I will surely stop by at Vivendi Café. For a long time, I didn’t even know that this cozy café existed. Luckily, I finally found it and now it’s my favorite café. They also offer many other delicious home-made beverages and cakes.

Chocolatrie am Klosterplatz, St. Gallen

Best hot chocolate St. Gallen

I didn’t take this picture but the hot chocolate really looks like this.

Another best hot chocolate is located in St. Gallen. The Chocolatrie is at a beautiful location opposite of the famous monastery and is a must stop with all my visitors. Unfortunately, there now is a new owner and the hot chocolate now costs 6 CHF instead of 4.80 from before. Find their opening hours here.

If you want to go to the old place, you have to go to the Maestrani Café at the chocolate factory in Flawil. They still make the most delicious hot chocolate to a cheaper price. Vivendi Café is cheaper (and now better) as well but the Chocolatrie am Klosterplatz definitely wins with the location and the international crowd.

Café Schober, Zurich

Schober Zurich best hot chocolate

Now I live in Zurich and it didn’t take long until I discovered another best hot chocolate in Switzerland. It’s really hard to decide which one is better, so I’ll just let you decide once you try it. This one is more expensive at 7.80 CHF but the café alone is worth a visit since it’s beautifully decorated. In summer, you feel like in a fairy forest and in winter it’s as if you are sitting in Santa Clause’s living room.

Le Barbare, Lausanne

Le Barbare LausanneI’m a huge fan of Le Barbare (click here to read more about that restaurant). During my exchange semester in Lausanne, my friends and I went there at least every second week. The house specialty is the “chocolat chaud épais” which means ‘thick hot chocolate’. And it really is rich of chocolate! It’s more like eating a pudding than actually drinking liquid milk. They serve it in pretty cups and it only costs 5 CHF. If you are hungry, you can also order a beautiful creation with whipped cream and vanilla ice cream. Mhh, mouthwatering if I only think about it. Plus, the location is a must visit while you are in Lausanne! It’s in the historical part of town situated on the side of a covered wooden stairway. When the sun is shining you should enjoy the view outside and when there is no space, the inside is very cozy. Unfortunately, Le Barbare is closed until further notice. I really can’t believe and understand it.

So, in my opinion, these are the three best hot chocolate you can find and therefore should not miss! The two following are also extremely good but I think you pay too much for what you get.

Café Weber, Davos

Best hot chocolate Weber Davos

Café Weber you spot from far away because it’s pink. As colorful its outside is, as delicious are the treats you find inside. They also serve different specialty hot chocolates which are very tasty but starting at 6.50 CHF I think they are too expensive compared to the other hot chocolate places. However, at all the other luxury restaurants in the skiing region Davos you will pay as much for a normal hot chocolate and therefore, if you get a hot chocolate, get it at Café Weber. The other thing that I think is a pitty is that you can only sit inside. On a beautiful winter day, you probably would prefer to sit on a terrasse and enjoy the sun rays.

Sprüngli, Zürich

Best chocolate in the world

I drank this one in Vienna

Pretty much everybody knows Lindt chocolate but it was actually Lindt and Sprüngli, two chocolateiers, in the beginning and the stock cooperation still carries that name today. There are many Lindt stores around the world, where you can get delicious hot chocolates and which I also visit frequently when I am traveling (they should give me membership) but in Zurich, you actually get the choice between Lindt and Sprüngli cafés. I only went there once as the hot chocolates start at 7.50 CHF and the atmosphere is not as special as at café Schober. But all the drinks there definitely look nice and we all know that Lindt chocolate is extremely delicious. (By the way, you can visit a Lindt factory store by taking bus #165 from Bürkliplatz to Kilchberg ZH, Schooren and once you get off there, you will already smell the chocolate in the air (I’m not kidding).
