How much does it cost to get a dress made in Hoi An?

hoi an lanterns

The small town of Hoi An is famous for its many tailors who will create a piece of clothing after your imagination.

The hundreds of shops can be a bit overwhelming and to narrow it down a little you really have to do some research on Tripadvisor, or like us, just ride the free bicycle from the hotel around town and stop at shops with examples you like.

For a skirt, we had a price span from $50 to $15. There are differences in quality of course but I wouldn’t automatically assume that a high price means good quality.
At the beginning, I had no idea what I should get but the idea of getting a custom made dress was just too good. So, I choose, I got measured and went back for two fittings (all in 24h) and walked out of two shops with two dresses and one skirt. (I assume more of my friends will get married in the near future and there will be good occasions for these dresses).

Apart from the tailor shops, Hoi An also offers other things:

  • 2 Beaches, of which An Bang is the nicer one but when we were there, the water wasn’t very clean and there were jellyfish which took my enthusiasm for the beach away after about 5 min.cost to get a dress made in hoi an
  • a clothes and a food market, of which I liked the food market, because it’s just so interesting to look at all the colorful fruit, the alive seafood they keep in tubs and the meat that lies on tables and is frequently visited by flies.cost to get a dress made in hoi an
  • many cute restaurants and cafés. Over all Hoi An is very cute and romantic with all its decorating lanternscost to get a dress made in hoi an
  • a night market. Be sure to haggle hard or they will rip you off

I had a whole meal with rice, meat and vegetables for less than a dollar. And afterward I got my hair cut for 80k VND, which is less than $4 and they even organized somebody for me who spoke English 🙂
It was nice to find some people who were happy that you were doing it the local way and didn’t treat me like a tourist.

I also liked Little House Homestay who looked after me very well on the day I was sick and the free bicycles were very convenient.
