Victoria Falls from Zimbabwe

The smoke that thunders is how Victoria Falls are also called. When you get closer to them, you will know why. The unbelievable masses of water that drop down the cliffs really deserve to be seen as one of the 7 wonders of the world.

Getting to Victoria Falls Town

We heard that the bigger section of the Victoria Falls can be seen from Zimbabwe. Hence, we landed at the small Zimbabwe airport. It took us about an hour to get through customs and obtain our visa. The visa to enter Zimbabwe cost us 30 USD. When the 15min taxi ride to our hostel also cost us 30 USD, we realized that this would be a tourist rip off place. Food/drink prices were almost Swiss everywhere. At least the surroundings let us know that we really were in Africa.

Victoria Falls Waterfall Park

Entry into Vic Falls National Park would cost, guess what, another 30 USD. However, since we started a tour with Nomad Safaris (I can really recommend them, especially if Cardi is your tour guide!!!) it was included in our tour price.

It was a hot but easy walk from the town down to the national park. Of course you could take a taxi or bus. Yet, if you are on a budget, just ignore all the taxi drivers and bring enough water on the 20min walk. In the park we walked along paved paths, heard the thunder of the falls and looked in awe at the masses of water that fell down. It was cool to see the falls from so many different angles from the viewing platforms. We were lucky that there was hardly any wind and therefore, we hardly got sprayed by water and could make fun of all the yellow rain poncho groups.
On our way back, we were accompanied by many monkeys.

By lunch time, it was really hot and therefore we jumped into the Rainbow Hotel pool. Yes, our first night on the safari we spent in a nice hotel.

Tip: Take a taxi to Safari Lodge to watch the sunset! You have a beautiful view over a waterhole and I could enjoy a nice cold Savannah cider.

In Victoria Falls itself there isn’t much to do but after walking in the park and marveling at the waterfalls, you probably just want to relax and enjoy a swim or good meal anyways.
